Rhett Butler

Ashley Wilkes

‘Gone with the Wind’

“Did it ever occur to you that I loved you as much as a man can love a woman?” he said.
“That I loved you for years before I finally got you? During the war I’d go away and try to forget you, but I couldn’t and I always came back. You’d had such a struggle, Scarlett. I wanted you to stop fighting and let me fight for you. I wanted you to play, like a child. I think you are still a child. No one but a child could be so headstrong and so insensitive.”
His voice was calm and tired. It was the voice of a man without feeling and without hope.
“Something is wrong, badly wrong,” though Scarlett.
“I knew you didn’t love me when I married you,” he continued. “I knew about Ashley, you see. But it was so obvious that we were meant for each other. I thought Ashley would fade out of your mind. I tried everything I knew and nothing worked. If you had only let me, I could have loved you as tenderly as ever a man loved a woman. But I couldn’t let you know, because I knew you’d think I was weak and try to use my love against me. And always there was Ashley. It drove me crazy. I knew there were times, so many times, you wished Ashley were in my place. When you were sick and it was all my fault. I stood outside your door, hoping you’d call for me, but you didn’t, and I knew what a fool I’d been and that it was all over. Then I saw Bonnie and I thought that everything wasn’t over, after all. She was so like you, so willful, so brave and full of high spirits. I could pet her and spoil her, just as I wanted to spoil you. But she wasn’t like you. She loved me and she showed it. It was a blessing that I could take the love you didn’t want and give it to her. But when she went, she took everything.”
Scarlett could understand his obstinate pride, so like her own, that kept him from admitting his love for fear of refusal.
“Oh, darling,” she said, tears coming to her eyes. “I’m so sorry but I’ll make it all up to you! We can be so happy, now we know the truth and there can be other babies.”
“My darling, you’re such a child,” he said.
“You think that you can say you’re sorry and fix everything.”
“But,” she said, “I love you!”
“That’s your misfortune,” he said. “Scarlett, it’s too late. Besides, I’m going away.”
She lifted her chin and managed to speak quietly and with dignity. “Where will you go?” she said.
There was a faint gleam of administration in his eyes as he answered. “Perhaps to England, or to Paris. Perhaps I’ll go to Charleston. I want the grace of days that are gone. When I lived those days I didn’t realize the charm of them. Do you understand?”
“No,” she cried. “All I know is that you don’t love me and you are going away! Oh, my darling, if I you go, what will I do?”
For a moment he hesitated, as if wondering whether a lie would be better than the truth. Then he shrugged. “What is broke is broken. I’m not starting all over. I couldn’t live with you and lie to you and I certainly lie to myself. I wish I could care what you do or where you go, but I can’t.”
He drew a short breath and said lightly but softly, “My dear, I don’t give a damn.”
She silently watched him go, feeling that she would die of the pain. Now, she had a fumbling knowledge that, had she ever understood Ashley, she would never had loved him; had she ever understood Rhett, she would never have lost him.
“But,” cried her heart, “I can’t let him go! There must some way! I won’t think of it now, I’ll go home to Tara tomorrow,” she said aloud.
She thought of Tara and it was as if a gentle cool hand were touching her heart. She could get Rhett back. There had never been a man she couldn’t get, once she set her mind on him.
“I’ll think of it all tomorrow, at Tara,” she said. “I can stand it then. Tomorrow, I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”
